Han Solo: Symbolic Surnames
Han Solo, another fan favorite character in the Star Wars films, is a renegade badass who travels the galaxy transporting illegal and exotic cargo. Han likes eluding the thugs who will try to steal from him and confusing the authorities who will try to stop him from committing illegal activities throughout the galaxy.
Han, believe it or not, is a bit standoffish. He has never really had a family before, and he prefers to work by himself or with Chewbacca. "Solo", Han's last name, is quite symbolic of how Han enjoys working--alone.
Symbolism in names is a very prominent tool used throughout all sorts of literature. Lucas' keen placement of such a name to help develop Han's character is something to note because it allows viewers to gain insight on a character whom they wish to know more about. At the beginning of the saga, Han has no place in the galaxy besides his role as a cargo transporter. By the last film of the original trilogy, Han become part of a bigger image that further develops his character. This transition from Han's initial state of solitude (Solo), into a deeply-rooted bond with his new friends and family is what is most recognizable about Han's character arc.
This overtly-apparent form of symbolism is a clever way to convey some of the messages behind character arcs without coming out and saying such things directly.
What is your take on Han? Let me know!
